Synopsis
Nobody paid much attention to John – just a normal teenager at a high school where the social elite happen to possess unthinkable powers and abilities. But John’s got a secret past that threatens to bring down the school’s whole social order – and much more. Fulfilling his destiny won’t be easy though, because there are battles, frenemies and deadly conspiracies around every corner.
Characters
John
John is the protagonist of the series. After being expelled from New Bostin for excessive violence, he homeschools for a year. At the beginning of the story, he hides his ability and pretends to be a cripple in order to get a new start. He becomes best friends with Seraphina, who he initially does not get along with when working on a group project together. However, when Arlo befriends him only to betray him to make John "learn his place" in the hierarchy, John reveals his true powers and once again becomes enraged. He starts turning back to his violent ways in order to destroy the hierarchy; first as "ʎɐpsǝn┴", a man with a paper bag mask, and then as "Joker", after Seraphina's powerless status being revealed to the whole school, which results in her becoming a target of bullying and even kidnapping. However, when his identity is revealed he openly parades around as king and causes violence around the school. Seraphina regains her powers temporarily and stops John's reign around the school, and helps him start anew once again. John later loses his ability to Spectre in the same way that Seraphina does, but discovers that he has resistance to the ability disabler unlike anyone else (the disabler was created using his missing mother's ability). Authorities later kills his father, and on top of finding out they are holding his mother hostage to harvest her ability, causes him to go on a suicide mission to take them down along with him.
Seraphina
She is the strongest student in Wellston, with an ability level of 8.0. Her ability is Time Manipulation, which enables her to pause, speed up, or rewind time. Using this, she becomes the Queen, but later creates the Ace rank in order to escape her responsibilities. However, she later loses her ability when injected with an ability disabler, leading her to become powerless. Through working with Spectre, she was able to temporarily regain her ability only if she agreed to work with them, but later betrays them when they trick her and hurts her friends. She becomes wanted by the Authorities for participating in Spectre, but she runs away and hides with her sister, Leilah, and Doc (Leilah's boyfriend and Seraphina's old school nurse) in advance thanks to Arlo tipping her off.
Arlo
Arlo is Wellston's former king. When he loses against John in disguise, he is dethroned as a royal and no longer has a title. His ability is Barrier with a level of 6.5. At the beginning of the story, he is extremely focused on maintaining order in the school and the hierarchy. Later in the series, he questions what he is taught and even defies his aunt's teachings about the need to maintain a hierarchy in order to save Blyke, Remi, and Isen from Ember. He takes a job in the anti-corruption department to get intel for the others at Wellston. He is arrested alongside Blyke after helping Remi and Isen rescue John to escape the Authorities ambush in their school.
Remi
Remi is the fourth strongest student at Wellston and queen in place of Seraphina. Her ability is Lightning, with a level of 5.8. Remi doesn't discriminate based on hierarchy, but due to her privileged position, she was unable to see the inequality around her until her eyes were opened by John. When Rei dies at the hands of Ember, Remi becomes distraught and starts investigating them. This leads her to become a vigilante to try to find out more about them. Remi and her friends discover that Ember is affiliated with the authorities, but they stop their vigilantism once they nearly die. However, the authorities already know that Remi, Blyke, and Isen's faces, and the authorities intended to put them in readjustment, but are saved by Arlo alerting them.
Blyke
The former jack of Wellston. His ability is Energy Discharge with a level of 5.1, which grants him the power to shoot powerful energy from his hands and body. He is best friends with Isen and Remi. Despite his hot-headed nature, Blyke is a loyal friend and is always ready to support and protect those close to him. Through training as a vigilante, he is able to rapidly become strong. However, he gives up his vigilantism at the advice of Kuyo, who saves him when he nearly dies at the hands of an ability amplified person. Blyke and John are roommates for a part of the series, and Blyke is initially scared of John and sleeps in Isen's room instead when John is on a rampage. After John's suspension, the King returns to school and bestows Blyke with the title. He slowly befriends John after the latter helps him on stopping Spectre from harming the Safe House on their field trip at the cost of his own power. He is later arrested alongside Arlo after helping Remi, Isen and John escape from Authorities.
Isen
Isen is a character in the webtoon known for his sharp intellect and investigative skills. He is a student at Wellston High and plays an important role in the school's hierarchy as a member of the school press. Isen is highly observant and resourceful, always seeking the truth behind various incidents and rumors circulating within the school. Despite lacking an ability as powerful as the other protagonists of the series, Isen's ability is very useful is combination with Blyke's, and is also useful for the press. While initially focused on his own pursuits and avoiding the gaze of those more powerful than him, he gradually develops a sense of empathy and becomes more involved in the struggles of his friends.
